Interventional Pulmonology Courses

Pleural/Thoracic Ultrasound courses

Prof YC Gary Lee is involved in running pleural courses at the University of Western Australia at the Clinical Training and Education Centre (CTEC). Advances in medical thoracoscopy technology are making thoracoscopic techniques more appealing and accessible to respiratory specialists. Medical Thoracoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic tool that has been an underused procedure in recent years, but with the advent of new equipment it is now undergoing a resurgence in Europe, the USA and more recently in Australia.

It is replacing the use of closed pleural biopsies in that it provides visual information about the pleural surfaces and the underlying lung, and allows the targeted biopsies of lesions, thus enhancing diagnosis. It can also be used therapeutically for breaking down adhesions and loculation, and for pleurodesis by talc poudrage.

This course is designed to aid the respiratory physician in the skills required to manage all aspects of safe interventional procedures. This course incorporates didactic, practical model sessions and an animal workshop. The course will use a combination of pre-reading, discussion and presentations.

Pulmonology - EBUS

Interventional Pulmonology is an area that is developing rapidly with new techniques directed at the diagnosis of lung lesions, the staging of lung cancer, the sampling of mediastinal and hilar nodes, the mechanical treatment of emphysema, possible therrmoplastic approaches to asthma, as well as more traditional treatments of airway obstruction by stenting or ablation procedures. The future may bring about the use of more local targeted therapies of conditions such as lung cancer.
