Dr Ai Ling Tan, PhD

Ai Ling Tan graduated with a 1st class Honours from The University of Melbourne and began her career as a research assistant for Prof Gary Lee in the Pleural Medicine Unit at the Lung Institute of Western Australia where she was one of the key members in building his laboratory research group. Her research interest then led her to complete a PhD with Prof Gary Lee in 2013. Her PhD project studied the role of fibroblast growth factor-9 (FGF-9) in malignant mesothelioma.

Following on from her PhD, Ai Ling worked in Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Unit where she managed 50 eligible out of 85 screened patients in 12 pharmaceutical-sponsored and investigator-driven cancer trials on various cancers. Subsequently, she was employed as a Clinical Trials Coordinator in the Department of Neurology where she was involved in negotiating budgets and contracts with Sponsors and supporting departments to start up two pharmaceutically-sponsored clinical trials. In addition, she independently discussed a stroke trial with 147 inpatients and solely recruited 40 in a year, making Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital the leading site of recruitment for the trial. 

AI Ling now works as Clinical Trial Manager in the Pleural Medicine Unit. She is passionate about clinical research and aspires to lead a clinical trial team to assist the healthcare professionals in improving medical treatments and providing a high quality of care to patients.
