Prof Jose Porcel
Prof Porcel spent three weeks in Perth focussing on developing pleural cytology expertise (with Drs Segal and Chai at PathWest) and also delivered several lectures during his stay. He also participated at the Pleuroscopy Course held at CTEC, UWA. Together with the pleural group at Bristol, UK and Prof Porcel’s group in Spain, the Unit has setup one of the largest database for malignant pleural effusion, which will be a valuable asset to help answer important clinical questions on this common problem.
Prof Richard Light
Prof Light visited the Unit as a Raine Visiting Professor and delivered several lectures at SCGH. The visit allowed useful exchange of research ideas, and Prof Light provided useful advice on research directions and projects.
Prof Matthew Wong
Prof Wong spent two weeks at the Unit especially focussing on the necessary skills to setup a tertiary pleural centre and an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) service. He has since started the first organized IPC service in Hong Kong at the Queen Mary Hospital.
Prof Pyng Lee
Prof Pyng Lee visited the Unit and delivered lectures on interventional pleural and pulmonary skills. The visit helps to consolidate our strong ties with the respiratory community in Singapore, and has led to applications for collaborative research grants.
Dr Tahla Mahmud
Dr Mahmud spent two months as an observer in the Department of Respiratory Medicine from his post as a chest physician in Lahore, Pakistan. During this time he was able to gain experience in inpatient ward/HDU and outpatient clinics including pleural diseases, lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary hypertension and obstructive lung diseases aswell as the pulmonary rehabilitation program and interventional bronchoscopies and pleuroscopies. Dr Mahmud was also able to spend time in both Pulmonary Physiology and the Intensive Care Unit.
